How Strict Are Airlines With Carry-On Sizes?
What makes an airline more likely to check cabin bags, and how to avoid a last-minute baggage fee.
Airlines tend to check cabin bags more often when a flight is full, boarding is busy, or the carrier sells a small free bag and charges for an overhead bag. That is why a bag that looks fine on one trip can be measured on another.
The useful question is not whether an airline is ‘always strict.’ Instead, ask whether your bag fits the published limit with room to spare. If it is within a centimetre or two, assume you may be asked to use the sizer.
A compact soft bag may pack more easily into an under-seat space, but it is not a promise that an oversized bag will be accepted. Measure it packed and use the official airline page as the final check.
